Evaluation

After I had my Miata, Bozo, for about two weeks I wanted to get out of a slightly wet corner quickly (yellow light). To my surprise, Bozo's tail was all over the place, I had little grip, and it took me about one-and-a-half the time I thought I would need to get through that curve.

Now the stock Miata does not have that much grip on purpose; it is part of the sport car experience. But if there is too much difference between the grip that the driver expects to be there and the actual grip produced by the tires, safety is in jeopardy. So I looked up tires on miata.net and decided to try the recommendation from Bill Ozinga from the Tire Rack and buy Bridgestone RE 930 tires.

Since I did not want to buy a second set of wheels (my stock alloys are great, thank you), I ordered the tires through Sears. They were on backorder and took about 2 months to arrive. Before they arrived, I went ballroom dancing once more, again a wet corner, barely dodging the cars around me.

After I got the Bridgestones, I have had no more problems. They are great wet and dry. Since snow and ice are rare over here in Tallahassee, Florida, I cannot comment on that. I have no experience with other tires except stock on the Miata, but I am very happy with the Bridgestones. I am much more confident now, especially after adding stiffer sway bars. Bozo now behaves as I think it should.

I am replacing the tires after 29,000 miles. This includes an aggressive alignment and some performance driving and autocrossing.
