Gunnison
I spent the night in Gunnison, population 4,500 and home of Western
State College. Its students carved a big W in one of the local
mountains, but I missed it. I gave a lift to one of the local
students the next day. He told me Gunnison's claim to fame is being
the coldest place in the US. Mainly because of altitude.
The temperature in Gunnison was OK when I was there, though the low
air pressure made it a chore carrying my bags a single floor up. I
had dinner in a low key restaurant frequented by the locals. I wanted
to stay the night there, but they did not have phones in the rooms,
so I would have been unable to check my E-mail.
