I drove through the south coast of Gaspesie and New Brunswick all the way to Prince Edwards Island, well beyond Charlottetown. A total of 489 miles over roads passing through all small cities. I was not planning to drive that far, but I could not find a decent motel in new Brunswick, and then Charlottetown was absolutely filled to the nostrils. I finally found a small free-standing unit in a motel in Olson. Fly swatter included. And a great increase in traffic safety was achieved with me out of the car.
This should be the island of "Anne of Green Gables," some popular bucolic children's books heroine. It is an area only two years ago connected to the rest of the world through a monumental bridge (toll CA $40, but only if you leave. ) The sides of the bridge are solid concrete walls to avoid problems with acrophobic drivers. But since they were doing work on it, I could get out and take a few pictures. No, you can normally definitely not stop on this two lane bridge. In fact, someone having car problems or running out of gas on this 8 mile long bridge must cause a major problem, I think. Though you may be just barely be able to squeeze through both lanes using the narrow side strips at both sides of the road.
