The part of old US 66 west of Gallup is simply I 40, so I made a lot of speed.
First detour was Meteor Crater. Yes, a big rock definitely made a big hole in the ground. Quite an impressive display of power.
Second detour was Walnut Canyon. Very pretty, what I could see of it. However, to expect an out-of-shape acrophobic to go down 225 steps plus steep-sloping, narrow paths much without guide rails, in the Arizona heat, with 7,000 ft of oxygen missing, would be a bit optimistic. Imbecilic, actually. I followed the short, level "crest track" only.
Final, last detour was Grand Canyon. I had been there before briefly, but not in a Miata, and that makes all the difference. I stopped at the Best Western in Tusayan and had an excellent dinner of onion soup and filet Mignon.
